Dear Parents,

I would like to provide you with some information about the small groups that I offer at New Emerson School. Here is a description of these groups:

  • Goal groups -This group is to offer support for learners with accomplishing school related goals (academic, behavioral, or social). I can meet with learners individually or in small groups (if goals are similar) to help them make a plan for accomplishing their goals, monitor their progress, and provide encouragement along the way.
  • Changing Family/Divorce group -This group provides support for learners who have experienced a recent change in their family due to parental separation or divorce.
  • Grief group -This group provides support for learners who have recently experienced the death of a close family member or loved one. A Hope West counselor will join the school counselor to co-facilitate these groups in the school setting.
  • P/T Cruiser group (P/T =Positive Thinking) - This group provides support for learners who worry a lot. Learners in this group will be encouraged to use positive thinking and practice relaxation techniques that help reduce worrying.
  • Lunch Bunch (offered to 5th grade girls in the spring) - This group will help prepare the 5th grade girls for middle school drama. The girls will be encouraged to use positive communication and problem solving skills.
  • Friendship group - This group is to help learners establish positive relationships with others at school and to learn and practice skills in growing friendships.

Please let me know if you have any questions about these groups, or if your child has another need that I might be able to help with.

Thank you,
Leslie Atchison
