Art Gallery at New Emerson

Our kindergarten artists are rocketing into creativity! With a space theme guiding our adventures, we’re exploring line, shape, and texture while learning how to use the art room and all its exciting materials.

Teaching for Artistic Behavior (TAB) is a choice-based approach that treats students as artists, giving them the freedom to explore ideas, materials, and processes while teachers guide and support their creative decisions. First grade students showed mastery of drawing techniques by applying them to a food-themed drawing of their choice.

These masterpieces dashed off to their forever homes before the cameras rolled! Tune in next quarter for a new collection of color and creativity.

Third grade artists explored the grid drawing method and colored pencil layering to create realistic drawings from photographs. Using the grid method, they broke images into smaller squares to focus on one section at a time, helping with accurate proportions. With colored pencil layering, they built up color gradually to blend and add depth, making their drawings come to life!

In Teaching for Artistic Behavior, once a student has demonstrated baseline knowledge of a material—such as how to use colored pencils, paint, or clay—they are free to choose how and when to use that material for any project. This gives students ownership over their creative decisions, allowing them to explore ideas, experiment with techniques, and apply their skills in ways that are meaningful to them, while the teacher acts as a guide and resource rather than directing every step.
