Art Gallery at New Emerson

After drawing cakes and ice cream in the car, I thought I could do even better. My birthday is in five days, and I was thinking about having a cake for my party. I love the colors I used because I think they look really good together.

This artwork tells the story of the early morning hours at a California farmers market. I used soft, blurred watercolors to show how quickly everything moves as the market wakes up. The folded and cut pop-up stands in the paper represent the new things that appear and stand out each day. I really want people to notice the farmers and vendors selling the food—that’s one of the most important parts of any farmers market.

My brother liked the cake I drew on my drawing pad at home. When I got to art class at school, I wanted to make another one to show him. This cake has more details — I added diagonal crosshatching lines, little dots, flowers, and short lines.
