Our Story

sn\chool

New Emerson School is a K-5 Public Magnet School in Grand Junction, CO with a specialized curriculum focus in Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics (STEAM) and Problem-Based Learning.

Established in 1995, we are a small, demonstration school that pilots research-based practices in teaching and learning to students of diverse cultures all over the Grand Valley.

Just like any District 51 public school, our school offers special education services and uses the same curriculum that all other D51 campuses use. But as a public magnet school with a specialized curricular focus, New Emerson infuses the STEAM elements into all of the traditional elementary school subject areas taught.

We are also work in partnership with the Eureka! McConnell Science Museum at CMU to provide a rich Science foundation for our learners.

We have 146 students with one class per grade level; however, our reach into the school community is much wider. We love to share our learning with other campuses and educators, and we work closely with local businesses and community organizations as part of our Problem-Based Learning D51 school model.

NE is a 1:1 technology campus and our newly renovated Library & Makerspace (Libratory) offers students a unique opportunity to design, build, create and engineer with a variety of plugged and unplugged materials. This new campus space was funded entirely through the generosity of the Grand Junction community.

New Emerson also has a rich history in literacy-based instruction. We begin each school day with our students reading out loud to parents, grandparents, teachers and staff members. This "Early Bird" reading time provides young readers with thousands of words more over the course of their elementary school experience and instills a life-long love of books and reading.

Another key feature of New Emerson is an emphasis on the "Whole Child." Student voice and choice are fundamental to the New Emerson school culture, and we value the social, emotional, and physical development of each child while striving to instill high standards for academic integrity and leadership in our students.

Our highly experienced teachers and staff also make our school one-of-a-kind. And because of New Emerson's small, magnet school model, teachers truly get to know ALL students. This important relationship is reflected in our school's high achievement. New Emerson has been recognized for its rigor and academic success as a recipient of the state of Colorado's prestigious John Irwin Schools of Excellence Award for seven years.

It is our sincere hope that students will leave New Emerson with the essential skills and necessary knowledge to be world changers and difference makers in our school, community, and global society.

Interested in becoming part of the New Emerson family?

All learners are chosen at random through a lottery process every February. Any D51 student is welcome to apply for the Lottery selection process after filling out an interest application and touring the campus.
